A look into the rules of color and how they apply to interior design, art projects and a variety of other professions.
Color is an important part of daily life. People use color every day, whether they realize it or not. Color is important to interior design, art projects, web design, business charts and spreadsheets, picking out a new vehicle, an advertisement on the side of the road and more. Color can even affect a person’s mood. Here are a few of the basic color rules used for interior design. Complimentary Color SchemesThis type of color scheme is seen frequently in every day life. A complimentary color scheme focuses on colors on opposite sides of the color wheel in order to draw attention. For example, the popular colors of Christmas (red and green) are complimentary. Other examples of complimentary color schemes are blue and orange or purple and yellow. Monochromatic Color SchemesA monochromatic color scheme focuses around a single color. This color is then translated into a variety of shades or tints. This is done by adding black or white in order to lighten or darken the original color. For example, a bright blue can be lightened to create a light blue, and darkened to create a dark blue. The three colors together represent a monochromatic color scheme. In interior design, using a monochromatic color scheme creates harmony within a room. Neutral ColorsSome people prefer the look of neutrals. Neutrals are either black, white, or grey. In certain circles, brown is also considered a neutral. Neutral colors can work together with other color schemes to create an overall visually pleasing effect. In interior design, many designers often pair neutral color schemes with a single pop of color such as bright red or blue. Analogous Color SchemesAn analogous color scheme is a group of colors that contain a common hue. They are also found next to each other on the color wheel. For example, if blue is the common hue then one can expect to see blue, violet and green in the scheme. This is because all three colors contain blue in order to create their individual hues. In painting, these types of color combinations are used to show depth within the art. Warm and Cool ColorsColors give off a specific vibe. If someone is looking for a warm color scheme, they can expect to be presented with various shades of reds, yellows, oranges and in some cases, browns. Meanwhile, someone seeking a cool color scheme will seek out shades of blues, greens and violets. The “warm” and “cool” terms have lent themselves to makeup products, interior designing and various other art forms. Color can have a profound effect on anyone. When it comes to using color schemes in interior design, most interior designers will seek out inspiration from the owners’ items such as clothing, dishes and take hints and cues from existing furniture. This helps provide the owner with a sense of comfort and harmony.
