Decorating the interior of your home can be fun and easy when you know what hue speaks to you.

Paint the bathroom blue and the kitchen avocado green. Coat the foyer sunshine yellow and the office sienna brown. Color actually tells a story. It not only affects your well-being, it can affect how you feel about your home.

You don’t have to be a color expert to know your perfect hue. “I know the neoclassical look works for me,” said Linda Martin, furniture manufacturer and interior designer in La Quinta, Calif.

Martin, who has been a designer for more than 36 years and has designed homes for actress Eva Longoria and rap star Nelly, decorated her La Quinta home with a gold colored plaster and renovated the most used room, her bathroom, with Venetian red.

“The look gives me that warm, relaxing feeling without making my home look contemporary,” Martin said. If you don’t have a color that speaks to you, go for one you like.

Understanding Color

Color has the power to change mood, the shape and size of furnishings, and the shape and size of the room itself. When selecting keep in mind the psychological value behind the color. Unless you consider yourself an unconventional painter, this will help you avoid choosing a color that may infuriate you over one that may be pleasing to the eye. And consider the style, make and design of your home before shopping for that hue that will speak to you. Consider the following colors as an example:

  • Yellow communicates happiness. It’s perfect for kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms when you want a color to energize and uplift. But yellow is not a good choice as the main color scheme of a room. People are more likely to lose their tempers in a yellow room, and babies tend to cry more in a room this color.

  • Green is considered the most restful color for the eye. Green is suited to almost any room in the house. In a kitchen, a sage or medium green cools down things; in a family room or living room it encourages unwinding, but has enough warmth to promote comfort and togetherness. Green also has a calming effect when used as a main color for decorating. It is believed to relieve stress by helping people relax.

  • Orange evokes excitement, enthusiasm and is an energetic color. While not a good idea for a living room or for bedrooms this color is great for an exercise room. It will bring all the emotions out that you need when jumping into your fitness routine.
