Brief descriptions of American Country, Country Cottage, French Country, English Country and Sun Country Decorating Styles.
If you’re trying to select the perfect style for your home don’t be too quick to dismiss Country style. The days of the country blue and pink and a house littered with bunnies and ducks with neat little bowties is pretty much over and several new types of Country decorating have risen from the ashes. American Country. This style of decorating takes note of and appreciates American heritage. It’s a very comfortable decorating style that features simple patterned fabrics, mix and match furniture with many distressed pieces. Accessories are practical and a touch of farming heritage may be present. Country Cottage. Cottage Country style is similar to English Country in that it embraces floral patterns and ruffles. But this style also takes a shine to knickknacks and touches of vintage pieces and nostalgia. The furniture is often recycled or extremely eclectic with few pieces matching, if any. French Country. This decorating style has been popular as of late. French Country has the darkest and richest color palette of the Country styles. Rich earthy colors take precedence such as wine reds, grassy greens, mustard yellows, pumpkin oranges and sometimes a touch of pop with an indigo or cobalt. Walls or trim can hold a white color quite well as the lushness of the accent colors give the room its vitality. The furniture is richly colored or distressed white or a combination of both and frequently has design intricacies such as turned leg. English Country. The English version is fussier than other styles and incorporates a lot of small prints and patterns in the fabrics. The furniture is elaborate and often features intricate detail in the legs and arms of chairs. Florals are a strong element in English Country decorating. Instead of embracing the simple life or a relaxed state of mind it is more formal and sometimes a bit fussy. Sun Country. This is a newer trend in Country decorating and celebrates a season more than it does a region or a lifestyle. Sun Country is found across the world and seems to be spreading pretty rapidly. The look invokes a sense of summer warmth and lush bounty while also maintaining a sense of elegance. The furniture is actually a nice combination of traditional pieces with more contemporary items. There are many more Country decorating subsets but they all seem to follow the same basic rules of appreciating the little details and time honored flairs as well as creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
