Change up any decor with this unique, but simple project using ceiling medallions.

Looking for a fun and unique way to dress up the walls? Thinking outside the box can yield amazing results. Ceiling medallions, which are typically used to add a decorative element to light fixtures, are a fantastic alternative to standard wall art options. All this project takes are a few basic supplies and an imaginative eye.

Materials Needed

  • 4-6 medallions
  • latex spray paint
  • protective face mask and gloves
  • adhesive or preferred hardware of choice for hanging

Consider Scale and Design

Ceiling medallions come in many sizes and shapes, the most common being round. Measure the blank wall and figure out how much of that space should be covered. Start selecting the medallions based on those measurements. This is where homeowners can really customize this project. Mix and match shapes and sizes and then paint in coordinating colors to create cohesion. Or, purchase round medallions in varying sizes and paint in similar hues.

Another element to consider is design. Medallions can be very plain or have very intricate detailing. Depending on the desired look, having several simple designs mixed with one or two intricate medallions will create a nice effect without looking too busy.

Where to Shop

Most major home improvement stores like Home Depot, Menards and Lowes carry ceiling medallions. There are also several websites where consumers can order medallions, the only down side being that it can be difficult to see details from an online photo. If able to adhere the medallions to the wall using an adhesive, ask a store clerk for help in choosing the correct product. Consumers who like to redecorate often should consider installing their new artwork with nails or whatever hanging method is preferred.

Putting the Materials to Work

Once homeowners have selected the medallions that will adorn their wall, it's time to transform them into pieces of art. Leaving the medallions as is, especially if they will be covering a dark wall, is perfectly find. White accents are a classic and clean way to accessorize a room.

  1. Position the medallions on a large piece of cardboard leaving a few inches between each piece. If using several different colors, do the painting in batches so there aren't any color mishaps. Be sure to pick a well ventilated location, outside being the most ideal.
  2. Use gloves and cover the mouth and nose with a protective face mask, spraying each medallion according to the directions on the spray can, holding the can the recommended distance from the surface. Be careful to cover all of the nooks and crannies of the medallions. Let the paint dry according to the directions before applying a second coat, if needed.
  3. Once completely dry, adhere to the wall in a symmetrical or asymmetrical pattern using either a special adhesive or a hammer and nails. If using nails, purchase proper hangers for the backs of the medallions. Avoid crowding the medallions together unless the space being covered is small to begin with.

With the medallions on the market today ranging from $20-$200, consumers can spend as little or as much as they want. This is an easy and inexpensive way to bring a little color, texture and contrast into any space and if the flexibility to change the decor from time to time is appealing, simply pull the medallions down and apply a new, coordinating color.
