Moving into a dorm room for the first time can be a bit overwhelming. There are a lot of things to consider when decorating a dorm room. What are the necessities?

Dorm rooms are small, and most of the time they are shared with at least one more person. Since space is limited, it is crucial to get the most out of the space available. Condensing tools are essential for dorm room decor, and learning how to organize is a must.

Dorm Room Beds

Depending on the college and the dorm, most provide half beds with what feels like a concrete mattress. A crucial factor in college success is an ample amount of restful sleep during the week.

Tip:

  • When purchasing the desired bedding, pick up a thick foam mattress. To save money and ensure comfort, get a king-sized one and fold in half under the fitted sheet.
  • Make sure the bed is against the wall and buy some overstuffed pillows and body pillows when decorating a dorm room. This will help turn the bed into a sofa without having to purchase a separate futon that will clutter the small space.

Dorm Room Closets

Closet space is extremely limited in a dorm room and it will fill up fast. Organization is important here because it is no fun not knowing where things are when rushing to class in the mornings.

Tip:

  • Wonder Hangers are great for dorm rooms. Keep categories of clothes together such as jeans on one hanger and t-shirts on another. This will save valuable time and space.
  • If dresser drawer space is limited, buy the clear plastic dressers that can be found at WalMart. Get the short wide ones so they can fit under the bed and save space. Some even come with rollers on the bottom.
  • Shoes should also be stored under the bed to avoid being in the way. They have specific crates for shoes that are designed to fit under the bed, and they even have dust ruffles called Shoe Skirts that hold pairs of shoes.
  • Use a laundry bag (like a duffel bag) with a sturdy strap for dirty clothes. These are better than bulky laundry baskets and can be shoved in the closet or under the bed. They can also be thrown in the wash with the dirty clothes.

Dorm Bathrooms

Sharing a bathroom can be a new experience for some people. It is important to keep these items separate and out of the way.

Tip:

  • Organizers that hang on the backs of doors are a great option because they are the size of the door with plenty of compartments that can be split between roommates.
