Painting walls green will generally create a tranquil environment. Although decorating with blue is easier, green seldom goes wrong. Looking at nature, green works as a backdrop for just about every other colour!
The danger is in being too pale, so look for a slightly deeper shade of green in order for it to make a difference in the room. Green is a receding colour which means that it is perceived by the eye as tending to move into the background. This effect can be used to make a small room look bigger whilst creating a sense of calmness.
Country Cottage Style with Green
A traditional Country Cottage style living room effect can be achieved by using floral wallpaper with a garden green and rose pink theme. Wall paper is making a comeback and there are some glorious designs. For those who are skilled with a stencil, try creating your own version of wallpaper by stencilling a repeat pattern. Borders and friezes don’t work with this theme, it has to be an all over design.
Choose white painted furniture or light wood. Match the colours from the wallpaper in fabric for cushions. Here stripes or checks in the same pinks and greens will work, but not another floral. Hang white or green curtains framing a window with roses growing in the garden and paint the front door green to complete a beautiful traditional country cottage look.
Strong and Dramatic Effects Decorating with Olive Green
Rich, deep olive green can create warmth especially in a large room with high ceilings. Team this with dark wood furniture and textured upholstery such as velvet or brocade. Add lots of plump comfortable cushions covered in shades of copper and cream borrowed from the rich neutral palette.
If the budget allows, bring green light into the room through a stained glass window. It is worth the investment.
For a smaller room with a striking effect, go for a strong green on a feature wall and paint the remaining areas warm cream with white woodwork. Look for a beautifully patterned rug or kelim picking out the strong green and including a few other colours including red. Accessorise with one or two red lacquered pieces, a lamp with a red shade or a large red framed mirror for real drama.
Decorating with Lime Green for Bright and Lively
Lime green and turquoise combine well for a children's room or play area. These lively colours can be reflected in the colour of the furniture and patterned fabrics. If the walls are painted a softer shade of green, the room will look bigger. Paint the woodwork the same colour as the walls, keep the carpets neutral and accessorise with a few touches of lilac to pull the scheme together.
For a contemporary bright look in a living room, try mixing lime green with orange and hot pink. Small amounts of these colours against a pale apricot wall could update a tired room and create an exciting atmosphere. Add one or two rugs in the lime green shade, teamed with striped cushions, to complete a contemporary looking room.
