Using indoor plants give a new dimension to home decor. Plants compliment all interior decorating styles and are versatile and easy to use.

Plants can be used as the finishing touch to enhance the interior design of homes and most decorating styles. A colourful display of indoor plants with or without flowers can brighten up a dull corner or add character to a neutral decor in a room. Unlike a flower arrangement, a plant is not limited by size. If necessary it is possible to use very tall plants, eg. Bamboo, where a smaller floral display would look out of place.

People enjoy growing plants and this pleasure can be increased by using the plants to decorate the home. Using plants also has the added advantage of changing the look of a room without major adjustments and costs.

Considerations when Decorating with Plants

The major considerations when choosing plants for interior decorating are:

  • Boldness and form of leaf, whether large and shiny or long and feathery.
  • Colour - foliage does not have to be green only. Coloured foliage plants such as Coleus and Crotons, can be mixed in with green only plants to make an enchanting display.
  • Size and style of the room, and
  • Suitability of the plant to grow in the conditions of light and warmth of the room.

Choosing Plants to Suit the Setting

If there is sufficient space, grouping a collection of plants can create a spectacular effect. Any one plant in the collection can be eye-catching in its own right, but grouped together with the right companions it is possible to create a dramatic effect.

Things to remember:

  • A neutral setting requires plants that contain sharp coloured foliage.
  • Mix and Match plants with varying styles and shades of foliage. Plants with large shiny leaves will compliment the furry or velvety foliage of other plants.
  • Leaves of various shapes also add to the contrast.
  • Plants have to be of varying heights to give an aura of nature - in a natural setting plants rarely grow to the same size and shape.

Mixing Flowering Plants and Foliage Plants

Flowering plants are a great addition to give colour and/or contrast to a collection. A tall foliage only plant surrounded by smaller flowering plants will make an interesting feature. When decorating with plants it should be borne in mind that there is no right or wrong way to using plants. The result is only limited by the imagination of the decorator. One of the main advantages of decorating with plants is that they could be interchanged as often as required without additional cost.

The use of plants to enhance the interior decor can be both versatile and cost effective. A display as dramatic as desired can be achieved with a little bit of imagination and by using the vast variety of plants available.
