Decorating with Wall DecalsTips to Customize Your Walls with Removable Wall Decor Stickers
Do you want to add color and style to your home with trendy wall stickers? Will they damage your wall? What rooms are they suited for? What styles are available?
The trend for customizing homes has gone beyond the paint on the wall and the color of your bedding. With widely available wall decals you can make decorative statements of your own that are sure to add flare and impress visitors. But how do you know if a decal is right for your room? What type of wall can it go on and will it look tacky or stylish? Wall Decals are Stylish and SophisticatedThe availability of stylish wall decor in the past few years has made it possible to choose from a wide variety of patterns, colors and media. Since decals are removable they are a great choice for commitment-shy decorators. Here are some suggestions...
The only limit is your imagination! Whatever your style – classic, country, bohemian or modern – there’s a decal that can add instant charm or amusement to your space. Where do Wall Decals Look Best?Your wall color will affect the appearance of your decals; light walls are typically a better background. You can, however, achieve a subtle tone-on-tone look if your decal colors are in the same family as your wall color, or create a vivid palette with opposite colors or contrasting shades. Unless your wall decals look appropriate ‘floating’ on the wall (words, birds or graphic patterns for example) you should try to visually anchor the decal to an existing piece of furniture or architectural detail. A flower can appear to ‘grow’ from behind the bed and makes an excellent headboard. Branches can sprout from door frames or wall mounted shelves. You can also apply the decals to kitchen cabinets or bedroom dressers for a custom look. How to Apply Wall DecalsApply the decal lightly until you are satisfied with the placement. When you are certain, run your hand or a smooth object over the decal to remove air bubbles. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations. How Safe are Decals for Walls? As with any adhesive, you should always test the area prior to committing to the placement. Avoid using decals on stained wood or other surfaces that could lift on removal unless you’re prepared to repair any damage. Flat paint may be more prone to lifting – especially if it was not well applied or the primer or paint is not of good quality. The longer a decal remains on a wall or other surface, the more likely it will lift paint or finishes. Depending on the manufacturer, your decal may or may not be recommended for reapplication later. It is best to not plan on reusing decals as they may be hard to salvage on removal. When removing a decal gently peel it away from the surface. If the paint or finish begins to lift try peeling from the opposite direction. If you can remove it in one piece, place the used decal on its original backing to avoid ripping or stretching and to prevent a build up of dust or dirt on the adhesive.
