Unique DIY Project Customize Store Bought Linens

4 Season Home Decorating Project Add Individuality and Fresh Appeal

Sep 11, 2009 Tracey Drake

Never settle for "off the shelf" ordinary store linens again. Turn boring buys into unique creations for the home - so easy that no sewing or craft skills are required!

For sewing wizards, especially those with new fangled machines that perform expert embroidery with ease, it is easy to customize, monogram and embroider everything in the home! For everyone else, there are simple no-sew solutions for personalizing bedding, towels, curtains and other linens with minimum fuss. Guest towels for the powder room are a favorite item to inject with personality. Grosgrain ribbon and themed trim makes a really fun finishing effect for towels and can easily be attached by hand stitching with a needle and thread.

No Sew Solutions for Beginners

Every fabric store carries decals, patches and monogram letters that are iron-on. These work especially well on nicer fabrics, such as linen towels, bed sheets, pillow shams and throw pillows. Transfers take less than two minutes to affix.

DIY tip: Certain cotton and linen materials will easily scorch and burn. This can be prevented by placing a thin towel or fabric remnant on top of the transfer before applying the hot iron. Iron-on appliqués come in all shapes, sizes and themes – from fancy calligraphy letters to children’s favorite characters and holiday themes. Great finds can also be found in the ‘fabric embellishments’ category on eBay.

Store-Bought Options

Not everyone has time in their busy schedule to create curtains, design a headboard cover or personalize towels. Luckily, there are plenty of off-the-shelf solutions that will work well and still offer that much desired put together decorator look.

Furniture Slipcovers Make Rooms Look Redecorated

Slipcovers have come a long way from the 1950’s. Companies like SureFit create furniture slipcovers that look custom made. For just a few hundred dollars, a tired old sofa can look brand new or give a room a totally different look for each season! It also keeps your upholstery like new and your furniture pieces will last longer.

When shopping online for slipcovers, be careful to measure the sofa, loveseat, armchair or ottoman at the widest and longest points, to ensure the cover fits perfectly when they arrive. Slip covers also work in the dining room on chairs, complemented by seasonal table linens to add an instant fresh look to the eating area.

Easy Bathroom Decorating with Seasonal Linens

Don’t overlook bathroom linens for easy, inexpensive ways to freshen up a room’s décor. For about $50 per season ($200 a year), change out the shower curtain, bath mats and towels. With a new decorator look in the bathroom for each season, the room never gets boring or outdated.

Do-it-yourself fabric projects are affordable and are a quick way to make a home cozy and inviting in no time at all. It just takes a little imagination and a desire to have a home that is charming, inviting and with a unique personality.
