Advantages and Disadvantages of Self-Cleaning Roller Painting System

Aug 13, 2009 Joanne E. Brannan

With careful use the Paintpod can make interior painting easier, but not foolproof, for the DIY enthusiast. Follow these tips to help avoid problems.

The Dulux Paintpod Self-Cleaning Roller System appeals to those who wish to decorate their home interiors quickly, with ease and minimal mess. The Paintpod unit and accessories are more expensive than most amateur do-it-yourself painting tools, and the paint is also more expensive than similar paints, however there are a number of advantages to the system which may justify this additional outlay.

The Advantages of the Paintpod

The Dulux Paintpod had a number of significant advantages over traditional decorating with brushes, rollers and paintpads.

  • With careful use, the system is cleaner to use for those with limited decorating experience.
  • The roller is quick to use as paint is pumped directly to the roller.
  • The system is largely self-cleaning, although it is important to complete cleaning the roller and dipstick pump if the automatic cleaning is not thorough enough.
  • The PaintPod Extra reach handle makes it considerably easier to paint large areas that are too high up to reach easily.
  • The detail brush supplied is useful for painting the edge between ceilings and walls, and other edges.

Drawbacks and Limitations of the Dulux Paintpod

Alongside the positive points listed above, potential PaintPod users may wish to consider the following limitations:

  • The Paintpod cannot be used to decorate out-of-reach details such as the edge between a high ceiling and wall. The detail brush is not used with either the Paintpod paint pump or the extra reach handle.
  • It is necessary to empty the delivery tube after the automatic cleaning cycle; otherwise the paint reaching the roller at the beginning of the next painting session will be diluted, and potentially messy.
  • If the automatic cleaning of the roller is not complete, and manual cleaning not carried out, the roller may become clogged with dried paint, which results in paint splattering during subsequent painting sessions.
  • The range of colors and finishes available is limited.

Tips and advice for the Dulux Paintpod Roller System

Follow these simple tips to avoid some potential annoyances of the Paintpod system.

  • The wireless control on the painting tool handles can lose contact with the base system. If this happens disconnect and reconnect the Paintpod power supply to “reboot” the system and restablish the wireless link.
  • If the roller becomes clogged with dry paint, replace it immediately to avoid messy painting sessions.
  • The power cable is easily knocked out where it is plugged into the Paintpod. If the unit stops working, check that this cable is still firmly plugged in.

These comments and advice are not intended to be a replacement for the user manual supplied with the Paintpod unit. Do read the instructions in detail before use, they are relatively brief and in general clear.
