Redesigning your Home Doesn’t Need to Cost a Bundle

Easy design tips when you are short on money but in need of a fresh look for your home.

If you are craving a brand new look for your home, it’s not necessary to carry out a complete home redecorating scheme. Following these simple, inexpensive tips can give you the fresh look you desire.

Have a Swap Party

Have fun modifying your interior by having a house wares swap party with your friends.

Invite your friends to bring over bath or dish towels, small decorative items, pictures, bedding, or pillows in clean and good condition that they would like to part with. Determine the order in which items will be chosen by having your guests each draw a number from a bowl.

Alternatively, if it seems that multiple guests like the same items, place price tags on each item and then give each guest play money for them to shop with. Next, in numerical order have your guests buy one item that they would like. If more than one guest wants a particular item, have them each bid on it to determine who gets the item.

When your visitors have run out of money, let them select in numerical order - or in alphabetical order using their names – from the items that are left over.

Reuse

  • Become a member of your local Freecycle group not only to give away your unwanted items, but also to find items to replace them.
  • Put new life into your old pillows by making covers with ribbon ties to hide the old material.
  • Sheets that are still in good condition can easily be turned into cloth napkins or drapes.
  • Re-finish the frames around your pictures.
  • Re-paint your furniture for help in transforming any room.
  • Give your dressers or cupboards a whole new look by replacing drawer pulls and door handles. Get creative by using found objects around the house such as utensils or puzzle pieces instead of standard pulls.
  • Swap your items from one room to another. For example, place your throw pillows from your bed onto your sofa and from your sofa onto your bed.

Replace

  • Shop discount stores and clearance sales at department stores for new items to replace the ones that no longer fit your decorating scheme.
  • Use an on-line comparison shopping service to find the lowest prices on the items you want.
  • Find bargains at garage sales and thrift stores. Show up early and be prepared to negotiate.

Finally, when redecorating, tie your rooms together by including touches of a common theme throughout the house, but begin by experimenting with modifications in just one room. If deciding on a color scheme is difficult, visit your local do-it-yourself store for paint swatches and buy accessories within the ranges that appeal to you.

Using your imagination can help give your home a more personalized touch without spending a bundle.
