Give your home a seasonal makeover with some of these ideas for fall decorating. A lot can be done on a small budget, so give some of the following ideas a try.

Autumn is many people’s favorite season. Sure there’s a chill in the air, but with it comes brilliantly colored leaves, crackling fires, and cozy nights indoors. There’s so much inspiration in the changing colors of nature, that it seems only natural to bring some of those changes inside.

Capture the spirit of the season by adding spice, color, and warmth to your home. Whether you're decorating for fall with pumpkins and gourds, or adorning the sofa with soft, warm blankets, it's the small touches that go a long way when decorating for the autumn season.

Simple and Crafty Ideas for Fall Decorating

There are so many quick and easy fall decorating ideas that can be done without spending a lot of money. Here are a few:

  • Create a simple display by filling a clear bowl or vase with pinecones, nuts, gourds, acorns – or a selection of all of them. Leave them as is for a natural look, or spray-paint them all the same color for a unified look. Silver, for example, is a sophisticated and elegant color choice. The items say “autumn” while the color says “glamour”.
  • Miniature pumpkins lined up along a fireplace mantel are a simple, seasonal touch.
  • Glue cinnamon sticks to a shallow tray (square or rectangular works best) and use it to hold keys, the mail, cell phone, remote control, etc. It’s pretty and it smells great.
  • Make candleholders out of small gourds and mini pumpkins. Cut off the top of the gourd and scoop out the desired amount of the insides to make room for a small candle or tea light.
  • Turn a pumpkin into a cute fall flower vase by cutting out the core. Experiment with different types of flowers (they needn’t just be seasonal flowers).
  • Pressing leaves is an oldie but goodie when decorating for fall. Mount a series of them in matching frames and create a beautiful wall of natural art.
  • Create a clean and contemporary centerpiece by filling a long shallow tray with nuts or acorns, then set scented pillar candles in the tray.
  • Small craft trees (widely available in craft stores) make a great Thanksgiving centerpiece. Spray paint one to match the fall color scheme and then have dinner guests write down words of thanks and hang them on the tree.
  • Make ornamental garlands by stringing together dried leaves and pinecones which can be hung almost anywhere in the house: over doorways, windows, fireplace mantels, and staircases are all great spots.

Decorating for Fall with Furniture and Fabrics

A lot can be done to make a space feel cozier in the fall.Putting slipcovers on the couches and chairs around the house is an easy way to dramatically change the look and tone of a room. Heavier fabrics automatically make things cozier. Cotton flannel, ultrasuede, chenille, velvet and wool are all good options. When it comes to color think about earth tones. Warm browns, oranges, and greens work nicely.

Also think about accessories. Accent pillows in fabrics like faux fur add a warm touch, as do cozy decorative throws. Toss one over the back of a chair or sofa. It’s practical and pretty!

As the weather gets cold many of us feel the need to nest. So decorate your home for fall and create a cozy and welcoming environment to spend the chilly evenings. Decorating for fall is fun and easy and it doesn’t have to be expensive. Whether you want to create simple table displays, or go all out and change the fabrics on the furniture, there are plenty of ways to decorate the home for fall.
