Greenary is usually used as a backdrop to enhance the beauty of flowers in an arrangement. However, a design with only foliage can be unique and very interesting.

Fresh green foliage cut from the garden can freshen up a room with very little effort. It is also a cheap way to add a unique touch to the home. Styled properly and by using suitable containers, foliage arrangements can compliment modern, contemporary or traditional furnishings.

A combination of floral and foliage only arrangements can be used to create an interesting theme in a home or other premises.

Varieties of Leaves Available

When used with flowers it is normal to use foliage that is mostly green in colour. However, leaves are available in many different colours, shades, shapes and sizes that can be used to make beautiful displays. Some of these are:

  • contrasting colours of red plum foliage and grey-green juniper branches,
  • iridescence of canna leaves,
  • leaves of magnolia- rich, shiny green on one side and velvety bronze on the other,
  • large glossy green rohdodendron leaves.

The list is endless. One has only to look around a garden to see the vast variety of foliage available for the taking. Besides sharp scissors or a knife, two other basic items are necessary to make a beautiful display using only foliage.

A Vase or Container

There is no need to buy special vases. Almost anything that can hold water can be used as a vase. This makes it very easy to select the size, colour and shape to suit the type of foliage and the decor. For instance any of the following will make a suitable and unique vase-

  • Shallow bowl
  • Serving dish
  • Large wine glass
  • Tall drinking glass

Floral Arrangement Holder

There are three types of holders that can be used.

  • Oasis or Floral Foam - this can be purchased in a block and cut to the shape and size
  • required.
  • Pinholder - these come in various shapes and sizes.
  • Chicken wire - a small piece that can be crumpled to fit the size of the container.

Mixing and Matching Different Leaves

Like flowers, leaves lend themselves to being combined in an arrangement. It is possible to use large green or coloured leaves with contrasting smaller leaves or leaves of different shapes to make a unique display. The scope of the design is only limited by one's imagination.

Since leaves are plentiful in any garden, experimenting with various combinations is the key to assembling a beautiful foliage only arrangement. If one lives in a flat or has a small garden with a few shrubs, a florist can provide cut leaves at very affordable prices- much cheaper than flowers.
