When decorating for the holidays don't forget about kitchens and bathrooms. Space is at a premium in these rooms so keep it minimal and don't overdo it.

Kitchens and bathrooms get crowded, there's no doubt about it. So when it comes to decorating kitchens and bathrooms for Christmas keep things simple. Avoid adding a lot of clutter and instead stick to a few small holiday decorations that pack a big punch.

Here are a few ideas for decorating kitchens and bathrooms for the holidays. Try to incorporate just a few of them and see how these rooms can be transformed without adding clutter.

Add Fragrance to the Kitchen

Decorating involves all the senses so add some scents of the season in the kitchen.

  • In the kitchen add a stick or bean of vanilla in the sugar bowl.
  • Make a holiday potpourri using cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, cloves, a few lemon slices and few orange slices. Put them all into a pot full of water and simmer on the stove. Use different variations of ingredients and amounts. Throw in some evergreen for a fragrant seasonal treat.

Prepare the Bathroom for Guests

  • Display guest towels and fancy soaps in holiday colors.
  • Purchase scented holiday hand creams for guests to use. They look great displayed on a bathroom vanity.
  • Place a holiday throw rug on the floor.

Use Ribbon to Decorate Kitchens and Bathrooms

There are tons of ways to embellish rooms using ribbon. Here are a few:

  • A kitchen chandelier or bathroom sconces that have small lampshades can be spruced up with ribbon. Use double-sided tape to attach decorative ribbon around the shade and it will take on a simple holiday look.
  • Wide ribbon can be tied around the backs of kitchen chairs for a simple holiday decoration. Tuck some evergreen and berries or flowers into the bow where the ribbon is tied.
  • Use double sided tape to add ribbon stripes around the toilet tank. It's simple and won't take up valuable space in this small room.

Decorate with Wreaths and Garlands

Wreaths and garlands needn't be relegated to doors and stairways.

  • Hang a simple wreath over a kitchen or bathroom window. Keep it simple and use something like boxwood or even a cranberry wreath. A simple wreath without too many embellishments will keep it from overwhelming the window. If there's no window in the bathroom, try hanging one over the mirror.
  • Use simple garlands and wrap them around a hanging light fixture. Either leave it as is or dress it up even more with small strings of lights and extra ornaments. Since bathrooms are usually smaller than kitchens, keep the embellishments on bathroom fixtures simple.

When decorating kitchens and bathrooms for the holidays try to only incorporate a couple of these ideas. Too many decorations in these rooms will overwhelm the space and create clutter. Keep it simple in order to maximze the impact and create a festive holiday look.
