Great home decorating ideas for both a formal and modern living room with a yellow colour theme. Find out why a softer yellow paint is best for walls and relationships.

Decorating with shades of yellow will bring light and energy into a living room. The shades in the yellow palette range from the palest cream, which is white with a touch of yellow, through to the bright daffodil yellows which are like liquid sunshine.

Painting walls yellow will give a lively feel, almost the opposite of decorating with blue which generally creates a calming and tranquil space. However, bright yellow is a stimulating colour, so use it in paler shades on living room walls unless the room is very large. Too much bright yellow paint on the walls can be intellectually too stimulating and can actually lead to arguments.

Formal Living Room Decoration

When thinking of living room decoration ideas, consider the times that the living room is mostly used and look at how the light or shade affects the room.

Decide on the focal point of the living room. It may be a fireplace or a beautiful window. Or a focal point can be created by the placement of an interesting piece of furniture or a painting in an area that receives good lighting.

Choosing room colours can be easy. Softer yellow paint colours, and warm golden or amber shades can look really elegant on walls, with the ceiling and woodwork white. If the room has a very high ceiling, use cream or yellow paint in a paler shade of the wall colour. On the other hand, if the ceiling is low, paint the skirting boards the same colour as the walls to create a sense of height.

The wall of the focal point could be painted a deeper colour, or painted in stripes of very similar colours. Use masking tape for clean lines, and remove it within an hour.

Keep the floors in a pale neutral colour which will contribute to the light and airy feel. Different shades of yellow will mix well for cushions and accessories. If a beautiful window is the focal point, frame it with contrasting curtains in a textured fabric.

Choose from some of the gorgeous metallic colours of bronze, copper and red gold, particularly if the room is in warm cream tones. There is no need for a room to look bland with some of the wonderful rich neutral shades such as chocolate and cinnamon that can add spice and contrast.

Add some cushions or a rug in the same colour as the curtains to complete the look.

Home Decorating Ideas for Modern Living Rooms

Stay with the softer creamier yellow paint on the walls. Add bright yellow cushions and perhaps one or two yellow accent pieces such as a mirror with a yellow frame, a lamp base and a vase. Curtains in striped or floral fabrics with a strong yellow theme will make a room warm and welcoming.

When choosing contrasting rooms colours, consider the atmosphere of the living room. To keep the look soft, go for the same density of colour. For example, painting the woodwork pale blue or green in the same pastel shade as the basic creamy yellow will be harmonious.

For a more striking look, consider a rich navy blue or deep olive green. Stick to the basic palette with accessories.

Experiment with what feels good and remember, when choosing room colours, less is more.
