Color is more than just the perfect scheme. Color has meaning and can provoke the wrong idea if misunderstood and misused.
Choosing the perfect paint color extends much further than just matching the sofa, the lamp shade and the carpet. The colors in a room can have a significant effect on someone’s mood on a daily basis. Having the perfect color scheme for each room can help create the perfect overall effect for a home. Colors are important for reflecting personality into the home. Colors can represent many different meanings and invoke feelings in people. Certain colors mix well with certain people, so paint can be one of the most important finishing touches in a room. Neutrals: What Does Black or White Represent?Black and white are exact opposites on the color wheel. Black absorbs light whereas white reflects it. White represents cleanliness, purity, and can give a refreshing feeling. Black, on the other hand is mysterious, sophisticated and powerful. Not all representations are good. For example, white can also represent a sterile environment, while black can represent death. Both of which, can deter guests from the home. Neutrals: What Does Brown Represent?Brown comes in a variety of shades from rich, chocolate brown to light tan. Brown is a great color to work with because it works well in many different styles of decor. For many, brown symbolizes nature, earth, organics, stability, and reliability. It can also represent dinginess or uncleanliness. Warm Colors: What Does Red, Orange, Yellow, or Pink Represent? Certain colors are often used to help give a room a “warm feeling.” Red, orange, yellow and pink are all great examples of warm shades. Red gives off a bold, vibrant feeling that can mean several different things in a variety of countries. It can represent love, happiness, romance, passion, excitement, and celebration but it can also indicate danger, blood, violence and anger. Orange is often considered to be a motivational color. This is because orange represents adventure, joy, warmth, balance, energy and power. It has also been shown to stimulate and aid in concentration. Orange can also be associated with flamboyancy or rebellion. Yellow reminds many people of a sunny day. It can symbolize friendship (such as with a yellow rose,) optimism, enlightenment, happiness and can also aid in digestion. However, yellow has also been associated with feelings of jealousy, dishonesty and betrayal. Pink is most often considered a feminine color. Pink is known to represent romance, innocence, happiness but also can give off a lack of masculinity. Cool Colors: What Does Green, Blue, or Purple Represent?Cool colors are generally associated with a calming effect. The basic cool colors are green, blue, and purple. Green, like brown, is often associated with nature. It often gives a feeling of renewed relaxation, youth, wealth, good luck and has been known to give off a soothing feeling. Green can also represent jealousy, envy, deceit and even misfortune. Blue is considered to be a universally “safe” color. This is because blue has a good representation with many major colors. It can represent sky, water, loyalty, cleanliness, peace, tranquility and stability. However, it can also represent depression or suspicion. Purple is most often associated with royalty, respect, wealth, regality, richness and luxury. It can also represent arrogance and cruelty. However, Purple is often considered a more sophisticated color because of it’s history with royalty. Overall, choosing the perfect color is fairly simple once one knows what to look for. Choosing warm colors are great for home offices because they can be motivating, whereas cool colors, such as blue are great for creating a calming effect in a bedroom. Meanwhile, neutral shades such as whites, creams, browns and touches of black can mingle through many different color schemes.
