Showing off your prized collections is more than propping them up on the mantle. Learn how to get the most out of your favorite collectibles with an imaginative arrangeme

Collecting treasures is a great hobby and pastime, but what good are those prized possessions if they are tucked away in a box under your bed or on a top shelf in a closet? Incorporating your hobbies into your decorating scheme infuses your home with personality and visual interest. It’s also a great conversation starter.

Unfortunately, those collectibles can be equally ineffective when displayed poorly and can even throw off your whole decorating scheme. Use the following tips to create the most attractive and appealing display for your collection.

  • A little can say a lot. Your entire collection doesn’t need to be on display to give a little taste of your personality and passion. Try picking a few favorite pieces and using them as a representation. If you have a hard time choosing your favorites, then consider rotating your displays.
  • Think outside of the box. A true collector knows there is more than just picking up items involved in the hobby. Display your collection with some tools of the trade to create more depth and interest in the overall scheme. For example, if you use a jeweler’s loupe to examine pieces consider adding on to the display and encourage guests to take a closer look. Or, use books on the topic to support your collectibles, literally. Books create height and depth.
  • Think inside the box. You don’t need to use a display box or shadow box for your collectibles, but you should identify one area as your display home. Then decorate this area with your collectibles and other items associated with it. Come up with a themed backdrop or placemat. Unify the area with the right accessories, colors and display elements.
  • Tell a story. If your treasured collection is a family heirloom then keep track of its provenance or history. Not only does a recorded history of an antique increase its value, but it adds interest to casual viewers. Display family records and photos of the item or previous owners. If your collection involves travel, use regional currency, stamps or postcards to tell the story of your travels to each treasured piece.
  • Visual Interest. The display itself will need a bit of arranging and work so keep this in mind as you create your collection display. Use height and depth to your advantage, making sure tall items are in the back, but not hidden from view. Arrange color combinations to draw the eye to your display.

Incorporating your personal hobbies or collections into your decorating scheme gives your home more life and personality and not only draws guests to the pieces, but gives them a little insight into your preferences. And it gives you a chance to talk about your collection passions.
