Fireplace mantels are often the focal point of a room, and how they're decorated can have a huge impact on the overall look of a space.

A room without accessories is a room without a soul, and fireplace mantels are the perfect spot to include them (as are bookcases and coffee tables). Creating the perfect display isn’t easy, so keep a few things in mind when accessorizing your mantel.

Mantels are a great place to display treasured items, but they can easily become cluttered and messy if not given the proper attention. The most important thing to remember is that a mantel looks best when filled with items that are loved by the owner. Treasured mementos, favorite framed prints, beloved heirlooms, etc. There are no real rules when it comes to what specific items look best, so use items that bring a smile to the face of whoever will see them the most. Whether it’s decorative boxes, candlesticks, vases, or sculptures, just about anything can work as long as a few simple rules are followed.

Symmetry versus Asymmetry in Mantel Displays

The rule is fairly simple. Symmetry denotes formality, while asymmetry is more relaxed. If the room is formal, a symmetrical display will work best. A casual room will benefit from an asymmetrical vignette.

Odds Trump Evens When Styling a Mantel

The rule of thumb in decorating and styling is that grouping items in odd numbers is always more pleasing to the eye. A grouping of three decorative vases will look better than two, as will five candlesticks rather than four.

The Importance of Color and Continuity in Vignettes

Keep your mantel from looking disjointed by using complimentary colors. Colors in the display should compliment each other, as well as other items in the room. An assortment of random colors will make your mantel look cluttered. For a truly bold, uniform display, use items of the same color and make a statement.

Consider the Theme of the Room When Accessorizing

The items used in a fireplace mantel display should complement the style of the room as a whole. As a general rule, a modern, spare room calls for modern spare accessories. That’s not to say that there isn’t room for contrast. An unexpected objet can add interest, just don’t overdo it.

Shapes and Sizes of Objects in Mantel Vignettes

It’s important to vary heights of objects on a mantle for the sake of visual interest. Begin by using taller items in the back and work your way forward. Layering items in this way will give the display depth. Avoid using large, heavy items as they will overwhelm the vignette, as will using too many items. Give objects some breathing room and don’t overcrowd.

Mantels are a terrific place to experiment with displays. Don’t take it too seriously and remember to have fun.
