Transform a rented home into an interior decorating masterpiece that reflects your personality.

Some people financially cannot afford to purchase a home; some just don’t want the headache, and others have life situations that make apartment more feasible. Whatever the reason, if you’re in a rental you don’t have to tolerate the current bland decorating scheme. It’s a misconception that rental units cannot be personalized to suit the needs of the tenant.

Before you get too excited and run out and spend a lot on paint and carpet and new countertops, you will have to review your lease and see what you’re allowed to do to your living quarters. Many landlords do not allow their tenants to paint the apartment, but if you’re on a friendly basis with your landlord and come to them with a well thought out plan that includes paint chips in relatively neutral colors, an agreement to pay for paint, and possibly a deal to repaint it before you leave, you may get your way in the paint department.

Carpets are a bit different as they’re expensive and cannot be returned to the original condition once you leave. If you have an older unit, which may already be in need of carpet, you could request a change and see if your landlord agrees and lets you help in the selection. If not, then consider purchasing a large area rug which will cover most of the existing carpet or, if you’re very handy, create a temporary floor out of hardwood laminate that will cover the middle of the floor. Both of these solutions are temporary and do not harm the existing carpet.

Countertops; well you’re probably stuck with what is there unless it’s in really rough shape. To cover bad counters you can get a large piece of wood or glass, roughly the size of the counter and lay a customized tablecloth on top of the counter and the glass or wood on top of that. This will cover the ugly counter and give you a work space that’s functional and attractive.

If you’re not willing to commit to these changes, how about adjusting your decorating style to include elements that will attract attention. Pick bold pieces of furniture. Use color to catch the eye and keep it away from the drab standard décor. Consider creating your own artwork: a huge canvas in one solid color gives your wall the illusion of a customized paint job while leaving the original in tact. Invest in a few showpieces that will enrich your environment with style and class.

Whatever you do, don’t feel trapped in your apartment or rental home. Make it your own with creative and fresh interior decorating ideas.
