Get creative new ideas for decorating a boy's room and getting your child involved in the process.

For many parents decorating a girl’s room is more exciting and fun because girls tend to be more involved in the decorating process but decorating a boy’s bedroom can be just as fun, especially if you can get your son involved in the process.

Active Participation

To encourage your child’s active participation in the decorating process make sure they feel that decorating is something that isn’t just for girls. There is this stigma and you have to remove it from the project. Then let them know that their input matters and you respect their decisions. You also have to let them understand that it’s their space, although it’s in your home, meaning you are willing to let them have their own space but there are obviously going to be some guidelines.

To Theme or Not to Theme

It’s easy to rely on a theme for a boy’s room, especially sports. A theme isn’t necessarily good or bad and may be an easy fun and exciting way to plan your child’s room. But stepping outside the box and creating a theme neutral room can be move versatile as you can change accessories to reflect current trends and favorite teams or characters.

Color Choices

Boys have favorite colors just like girls do, they may not be as passionate as little girls are about pink but they have colors they prefer and it may be an incredibly liberating experience for them to get to look at an entire paint deck and select their favorite color(s). It’s with paint and color that you can really get creative in a room by painting the ceiling, paint stripes, circles, flooring, squares, make the wall(s) a bold statement and an exciting aspect of the room.

The Bed

Most people opt to keep the beds their children have as it can be an expensive purchase but there is no reason to leave the bed as it is and not turn it into a design element. If you’re creative and handy then a loft bed might be an exciting idea and it leaves the space underneath open for a game room or you can enclose it and make it into storage. Or do the opposite and build a structure around the bed that can serve as storage or a jungle gym complete with slide. Just remember, always think safety first.

The Floor

Children take advantage of their floor space more than adults do and this needs to be taken into consideration. The best way to handle a floor is to have elements that can be changed. A mat the can be pulled out for wrestling or rough housing, a soft mattress or carpet for reading or sleepovers, and a hard surface for writing, drawing and car races.

Study Space

Encourage studying and academic pursuits by giving your child a place to study that has proper lighting, ample space, an organization scheme that is easy to adhere to, a complete array of supplies and anything else that will spark that intellectual side.

But all in all, the main element in decorating your child’s room is their personality. Try to get as much input as you can from your child rather than decorating their room in something you think is adorable or something you’ve seen in a magazine.
