It may not be the new black, but white is making a comeback and a huge splash in interior decorating schemes.

Just as it seemed the world was embracing color in their homes suddenly white comes back with a vengeance. Whether this has you cringing or shouting with joy, there are different ways to incorporate white into your home in a trendy, stylish and fashionable way without going back to the old boring standard white walls of yesterday.

Unless you have a thing for sterile environments, then you’ll probably want to spice up your white with just a hint of tint. Now if the idea of your white being tainted by tint, keep in mind that most designers actually consider white a tint, not a color, but for our purposes we’ll consider it a color and discuss the tints you can put into it.

A white with a hint of blue gives a more sterile appearance than any other. An antique white or one with a little yellow or brown in it gives a softer, warmer glow. Tints of gray give you a modern, edgy feel that balances even better with stark white accessories or trim. If you’re still not quite grasping the tint options, head to your local paint store and snap up a variety of white paint samples and compare the barely perceptible tint options.

Now, decorating in white can be as simple as adding a few fresh white touches to your already finished room. It doesn’t necessarily mean going hog-wild and creating a white-on-white masterpiece, although there is something to be said for tastefully done white-on-white rooms. If you’re looking to add a bit of white to your home to give it a fresh new feel, consider the following suggestions.

White Dinnerware

Often ignored or forgotten, dinnerware can play a big role in your decorating scheme as you often have guests over for coffee, or dessert, or a dinner party. Clean lines and crisp white tableware are always classy and effective and keep the focus where it should be, firmly planted on the fare you are serving.

White Woodwork and Trim

The popularity of white trim waxes and wanes with the years, but it’s still the freshest and cleanest look around. A quick touch-up every few years and your woodwork will always look sparkly and new. If you want a real change, consider adding white crown molding for added eye appeal.

White Furniture

Be careful here, this isn’t always the best choice for people with children or pets, but if it fits your lifestyle then go out on a limb; nothing says bravery to your guests like a crisp, clean, white couch and (gasp) ottoman.

White Accessories

It’s sort of a catchall, as accessories can be anything, but you can use this to incorporate as much white as you want. From furniture to pillows and blankets to small knickknacks, add as much or as little white as you want.

White is one aspect of decorating that sees significant swings in popularity. Currently it’s on the rise; if you’re a trendy soul, then dive right in and experience a beautiful transformation in glowing white. If you’re a little hesitant, choose a muted white and apply it to simple accessories or easily replaceable items. It’s easy to be trendy once you gauge your level of commitment.
