Home interior design is an art that does not come naturally to everyone. However, decorating basics will provide a blueprint for the creative mind to go to work.
Interior decorating can be overwhelming and frustrating if it is not an innate talent. It is easy to make expensive mistakes. Here are some straightforward decorating ideas and interior design basics to help jumpstart the process.
Decorating Basics for Painting
Choose paint last: Choose furniture, carpet, curtains and other fabrics before painting. Paint is available in every shade of every color. It is easier to match paint with fabrics than to match fabrics with paint.
Bring paint chips home: Always bring paint samples and chips home to place next to furniture, fabrics and carpet. Paint colors will never look the same at home as they do in the stores. It is imperative to put paint chips and samples under the actual home lighting.
Do not use stark white: Even if you like white, all white walls do not portray a lot of style. Walls do not need to be flashy or ridiculously bold, just not stark white. A nice neutral, barely there color will add warmth to a room. If this is not suitable, then consider doing an accent wall in a color other than white.
Decorating Basics for Furniture
Outline furniture measurements: Before ordering furniture, get the exact dimensions, take some bright colored painting tape and outline the measurements of the furniture on the carpet. This is essential to ensure that furniture does not overfill a room. Of course, this is more convenient when ordering furniture online because the measurements are available, but this can also be done in a furniture store. If there is furniture that sparks interest, measure it, take the dimensions home and outline them on the carpet. The furniture will be there the next day or it can be ordered—no matter what the salesperson says.
Create a focal point or several focal points: Have a focal point to situate furniture around. The focal point can be a piece of artwork, an entertainment center or a coffee table. Whatever it is let it direct where the rest of the furniture is placed. In larger rooms, do not outline the walls with furniture, but create little grouping areas with their own focal points for guests to enjoy separate intimate conversations.
Separate large furniture pieces: Never put two huge pieces of furniture next to each other. If the living room is big and has two large sofas, put them across or diagonal from each other with another smaller piece of furniture, like a chair, in between them.
