Making curtains for a room can help keep a project within budget and can allow custom made window treatment to pull a room together.

An easy and inexpensive way to do this is by using a cotton shower curtain.Shower curtains come in plain colors or patterns and prices range from $5 at outlet stores to $40 and up for name brands.

By making curtains instead of purchasing them, other decorations from the room can be incorporated into the curtains. Border wall paper can be sewn onto the curtain, giving the room a complete look.

The steps for this particular curtain use Command Strips hooks by 3M. They stick to the wall without nails and each hook holds up to 3 pounds. Other similar hooks will also work.

A curtain rod could also be used by threading it through the existing holes. Or by sewing straps to the back with a button on the end that loops over the curtain rod and buttons into the shower curtain holes.

Materials Needed for Curtain:

  • Cotton shower curtain
  • Border wall paper
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine or needle to sew by hand
  • Tape measure
  • Wire
  • 4 medium hooks

Using a Shower Curtain for Window Treatment

  1. Measure window to determine how many shower curtains needed. Most shower curtains are 6 feet wide.
  2. Cut the wall paper long enough to stretch across the top.
  3. Pin the wall paper along the top of the curtain.
  4. Set the sewing machine to a 4 mm length with the tension between 2 and 3. Practice on a scrap piece of material and wall paper to get the right tension.
  5. Sew the top of the border to the curtain. By not sewing the bottom, it allows the curtain and border to hang nicer.
  6. Cut out designs or pictures from the wall paper.
  7. Pin these cut outs onto the curtain in a pattern or place them sporadically on the curtain. Sew them on. It works best to sew a line throw the design or to sew the center. Sewing around the outline will cause the cut out to bunch up.
  8. Thread the wire through the holes along the top of the curtain where the shower rings traditionally go. Secure the end by looping it and twisting the wire back onto itself.
  9. Put the hooks on the wall. For a 4 foot window, the hooks will be 16 inches apart. (The hooks take an hour to set up before weight can be put on them.)
  10. Hang the curtain by the wire. To make the wire tighter, twist loops throughout it and tuck the loops down so they do not show over the curtain.

Whether it is due to budget issues or getting a perfect match, making curtains can be easy and affordable.
