Getting a proper fit for your window treatments means you need to measure your windows correctly. It’s not a difficult task but there are some rules and tips that will ensure your new window treatments look fabulous.
First you need to decide what type of treatment you want. If you’re more contemporary then you’ll probably want something that’s clean and sleek looking which generally means an inside mounting treatment is what you’re looking for. If you’re going to use an inside mount your first measuring task is to measure the window frame depth to make sure that you select hardware that fits. The manufacturer will recommend a minimum depth for their products so you’ll know what you can pick if you come to the store armed with your sill measurements.
If you’re looking for a more classic or traditional look then you’ll want outside mounted window treatments. This is also an excellent solution if your window frames are in bad shape or if you’d like to make a small window appear larger. With an outside mount you’ll have to decide where you’re going to place the hardware and measure accordingly. You may also want to pre-select your hardware and read the manufacturer’s instructions before determining your final measurements.
For measuring the window itself you will need to take exact measurements of all four sides of your window. It may appear as though the top and bottom are identical but sometimes they’re not, same with the sides. Make sure you note which measurement applies to which side of the window, don’t rely on your memory because this is the key to measuring for window treatments.
Never use a ruler for measuring as your measurements will not be accurate. A plastic or cloth tape measure will work but they can stretch over time and may not be as accurate as necessary. A metal tape measure is the best way to go and they’re very inexpensive and often free if you frequent home shows.
If you’re thinking about getting blinds and shades, certain types need special considerations for the unique hardware that these window treatments require. This is another situation where you’ll need to check with the manufacturer and get the specifications for your particular model.
Lately, blackout shades or room darkening curtains have become very popular but if you mount them inside the window frame you may get an annoying crack of light seeping through on either side of the blind. To avoid this you’ll probably want to use an outside mount and add an extra inch on either side so you get full coverage.
With these tips in mind and a good understanding of what your window treatment manufacturer recommends you’ll get the perfect fit every time.
