Shapes for Flower Arrangements

Having a Pattern in Mind Leads to Successful Flower Arranging

Oct 12, 2009 Pauline Mascarenhas

All flower arrangements, except the oriental or the abstract, are done in a specific shape or pattern. Starting with a shape in mind leads to a successful floral display.

When doing a floral display the shape of the arrangement is dictated by many factors. However, having a specific shape in mind is important. The shape chosen depends on:

  • the kind of flowers and foliage, some lend themselves to a tall arrangement and others do not;
  • position of the arrangement- whether on the floor, on a dining table and so on; and
  • the size and shape of the vase or container.

There are six common shapes that are used in most flower arrangements.

Triangular Floral Display

The triangle is the most popular basic shape for a symmetrical arrangement. It lends itself to many variations of height and width. The triangular shape is versatile in that flowers and foliage can be arranged in a tall container for a floor display or a shallow bowl for a flower arrangement to sit on a small table.

The focal point of the triangular arrangement is the centre with the larger or darker coloured flowers complimented by a framework of softer colours and smaller flowers.

Circular Flower Arrangement

The circular or round shape is in keeping with nature since the majority of flowers fall into this shape. When arranging flowers in a circular design using round flowers, it is important to break up the monotony by using foliage that offers contrast.

Flowers Arranged in a Crescent Shape

This is an asymmetrical design which can be either right-handed or left-handed. A crescent shaped flower arrangement tends to be rather formal and also requires more skill and experience. The stems of the flowers and foliage have to be pliable enough to be manipulated to the required shape. Brittle stems, such as iris, are not suitable because they will probably snap.

The Torch or Candlestick Flower Arrangement

This slim vertical arrangement is very useful when there is very limited display space such as an alcove.

Gladioli and their own spear-shaped foliage are excellent for arrangements of this type and many other tall plant materials are adaptable.

Flowers Arranged in a Fan Shape

This horizontal shaped arrangement is very often used as a centerpiece on a long table and is usually placed length-wise. Since the display is not too tall it does not interfere with across-the-table talk. With a fan-shaped arrangement it should be remembered that it has be symmetrical because it will be viewed from all angles.

Right-angled Triangles with Flowers

When a display is required in a pair (for instance for either side of a doorway) flowers arranged in the shape of a right-angled triangle, one facing right and the other facing left, is very effective. These asymmetrical arrangements are most suitable for low rectangular containers.

When starting a flower arrangement the choice of the shape is dictated by the position of the display. The flowers, foliage and the container should be chosen to suit the shape.
