Learn about the types of traveling chests or trunks and how you can use them to decorate your home today.

Trunks have been used for traveling for thousands of years, most notably in China, but the most readily available trunks are from the 18th to the 20th century. These trunks go by a number of names and are often fall under the generic heading of steamer trunk, although this is actually a specific type of trunk that features a flat top.

Trunks were originally designed for long-term travel and to be treated like luggage. Unlike chests, they tend to survive in better shape because of their rugged construction. Most trunks feature a pine base covered with protective and decorative materials. Some of the nicer trunks featured matched oak slats and are extremely rare, more common coverings of leather, paper, canvas and tin can be found relatively easily and inexpensively.

Trunks, like luggage, came with their very own fashion trends which waxed and waned over time. Most are defined by their shape as in the flat tops, the Jenny Linds (named for the shape of a famed singer), dome tops and barrel tops. Some trunks are simply reinforced chests with large open space, but the highly sought after dresser trunk comes with drawers, trays and lids.

Trunks were once a necessity for travelers but quickly faded when less expensive and easier to move luggage made its appearance. Since then trunks have become a great interior decorating accessory. If you've got a trunk or are looking to add one to your home (as many are very inexpensive) then consider converting it by using one of the following decorating tips.

Use a Trunk as a Coffee Table

Steamer trunks make excellent coffee or end tables. You can put a lot of effort into properly restoring the trunk, leave it as is, or decorate it in your own unique way to create the effect you want. having a piece of glass cut to fit or that is slightly larger and placing it on top of your traveling trunk to prevent it from glass rings, stains and other damage.

Steamer Trunks as Mud Room Bench/Storage

Instead of buying a brand-new bench with storage baskets, plant a steamer trunk in your mud room and you've got instant class. Not only that, but you've got storage for off season toys and clothing and a spot for little ones to plop down while they pull on shoes and other gear.

The Traveling Case Bookcase

There are a myriad of options for positioning the trunk; you can go for the straight on-the-floor look, stacking steamer trunks, nailing them into a corner, or attaching legs. Whichever way you decide to go, steamer trunks make great bookcases and attractive displays for travel memorabilia.

Steamer Trunk as Blanket Box

Steamer trunks are the perfect shape and size for end of the bed blanket boxes. Give the steamer a fresh coat of paint or restore it to its original lustre and you've got a very fashionable, trendy storage option. If you're a bit of a DIYer, you can make your own pillow top and you've got a comfy seat as well.

Playtime Wardrobe from a Dresser Trunk

A dresser trunk makes the perfect dress-up storage for your kid's play outfits. But a standard trunk does a great job as well. If you want to go all out, paint the trunk and decorate it with stickers, glitter, postcards, pictures or anything else that fits your child's sense of style.

Traveling Chests have a long history and have served many functions but never with as much versatility as they now have. For a small outlay of cash you can create your own unique home decorating accent piece that is stylish enough to impress guests and durable enough to withstand loads of abuse.
