Storage Solutions for Small Spaces

Creative Ways to Organize a Smaller Room

Sep 23, 2009 Rhonda Rowley

Staying organized in a small space can be challenging due to lack of storage space. Overcoming this challenge requires a degree of creativity.

Whether trying to fit furnishings and other belongings into a studio apartment or just an undersized room, organizing a small space can be difficult. However with a little ingenuity, these storage solutions for small spaces will transform any space from cluttered to clean!

Maximize Available Space

When is comes to small spaces, every square inch counts. Get the most out of all available space by utilizing what might otherwise be neglected, dead space in the room.

In small bedrooms, underneath the bed is an excellent place to add storage. Many commercially-made containers are available for this purpose, or custom storage units can be built. For even more storage space, elevating the bed and building a custom storage unit with drawers can take the place of a dresser, eliminating the need for an extra piece of furniture and freeing up floor space.

When organizing small bathrooms, look for spaces such as gaps between fixtures and the wall. Placing units for holding paper products, toiletries, or linens in these spaces will provide extra storage without taking up valuable floor space.

Keep the Floor Clear

In small spaces, leaving the floors clear of unnecessary furniture and other items will create the visual illusion of more space. Whenever possible, move storage units off of the floor and instead mount them on the wall.

When it is not possible to use wall-mounted storage, extend storage as far upward as possible. Using floor-to-ceiling shelving or cabinetry, or stacking storage units on top of each other, will help maximize storage space while making the room appear larger.

Cut the Clutter

In small spaces, closed storage is preferable. Cabinetry and other closed storage will hide any clutter, making the space look cleaner. Open storage, such as shelving units, must be kept neat and tidy to avoid looking cluttered and overwhelmed with stuff.

Some items, such as linens, look nice when neatly folded and stored on shelves. Other items, such as toiletries and paper products, look better when discreetly tucked away,. One storage solution for using shelving in a small space is to create “drawers” by finding baskets or other storage containers that fit into the shelves. Placing smaller items or other things that are better left unseen into such storage containers will streamline the look of the shelves, creating more storage space while reducing clutter.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Sometimes, small spaces require even more creativity when it comes to organization and storage. When faced with odd sized or shaped spaces for storage, be on the lookout for items that can be repurposed as creative storage. Try using a spice rack to organize pill bottles in bathrooms lacking a medicine cabinet, or mounting wooden fruit crates in the wall to create bookshelves.

With a little ingenuity and some careful planning, organizing a small space is a much simpler task than it may seem!
