Quality Furniture by Alex LamontLamont Designs Objets d'Art in Rare and Fine Materials
Scots-born designer Alex Lamont has two loves in his life: Thailand first and running a close second, designing and manufacturing fine art decorative materials.
Alex Lamont made his first trip to Thailand at the tender age of 13 – years later in life, his passion for Thailand the country, its people, culture and history grew so intense that he studied the Thai language and anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies University of London. Luxury Furniture ImportersThe Lamont family already had an established company importing luxury furniture and crafts into the United Kingdom so it was not a great leap for Alex to settle permanently in Thailand and to establish his business of designing and creating works of fine art and furniture. His furniture and fine objet d’art are displayed in five star hotels throughout Thailand and Asia; from the Sukhothai in Bangkok to the Chedi in Chiang Mai and from Nam Hai Vietnam to the Aman Summer Palace, Beijing. Alex and his team have just completed the interior decoration for the Norman Foster-designed Capella Sentosa Hotel and Resort in Singapore. Store at Gaysorn Plaza BangkokAlex Lamont now has five stores in Thailand and has a team of nearly 80 artists and craftsmen producing exquisite yet understated furniture and objet d’art that define the best of Thai modern art. His design studio at Bangkok’s exclusively elegant Gaysorn Plaza has become a Mecca for the discerning decorator and house-owner who wants the best of the best. Handcrafted PiecesEach Lamont piece is handcrafted and his eye for detail and his perfectionist nature are evident in every artifact. Alex’s commitment to the quality of his pieces is evident in his endeavour to increase the skills of his workers by regularly inviting both Thai and foreign masters to teach his artisans techniques that have endured for millennia. Jean Perfettini, master of galuchat and marquetry at the Musee des Art Decoratifs, Paris, taught Lamont’s artisans in the arts of shagreen, parchment and marquetry. Norbert Gutowski, head of furniture restoration in Westdean College, UK taught the art of shellac polishing and furniture restoration. Kenniji Kayama contributed his knowledge of the techniques of natural lacquer polishing and Japanese gilding while the studio’s Khun Shoson, Head of Production, spent time in Kyoto, furthering his knowledge on lacquering and metalwork. In this age of mass-production and standardisation, the desire for the unique is ever more pronounced. Lamont has developed the expertise to achieve the quality of previous generations of craftsmen no matter how laborious or difficult the technique, nor how rare the material. Lamont Product RangeThe range of Lamont products is limited by the nature of the manufacturing process and ranges from ceramic and glass vases and vessels through limited edition lacquer, decorative accessories lamps to bowls and vases, hand built furniture in traditional and contemporary styles, antiques and modern sculpture. Lamont’s artists work with the finest and most rare of materials from shell, silver, lacquer work, chagreen, parchment and even petrified wood. The end result are objects of desire that will grace any home and more they will become heirlooms and in the words of the legendary song increase in value as time goes by. Alex Lamont has showrooms throughout Thailand but the main outlet is at Bangkok’s Gaysorn Plaza.
