Use touches of gold, bronze, and copper to give your home a touch of warmth and a deep richness.
Winter is quickly approaching, and whether you live where it simply grazes your life or where it drops on you hard, covering you in frozen white, you’ll feel the chill. There is just something about this time of year that seems to suck the warmth and life out of the air, especially once the holidays are over and you’re left with a blank canvas. Until Mother Nature does her magic on the outside, painting the world with color, you can do your best to brighten the inside by decorating it with brightness and warmth. Silver has been a decorating trend for the past couple of years, it nicely complements and contrasts the popular twist on earth tones but gold gives off more warmth and creates a feeling of luxury that sits nicely on top of a cold, wintry world. If you’re looking to do a little seasonal decorating that brings some life into your home consider adding gold, bronze and copper to your décor. You can choose pieces that are actually made of these metals or use paint or gold/bronze/copper leaf to create your own accessories. In addition, fabrics that feature these rich tones as either the main color or as an accent give new life to your interior decorating scheme. To begin adding a warm metallic tone now, add some throw pillows, a blanket, and an area rug to your decorating scheme. Then add to your collection by picking up candles, candle holders, vases and other smaller accessories. Before Christmas boost the effect even more by adding a couple of large accessories, try a large gold mirror or a bronze statue or a large copper container. You could even refinish a couple of end tables or a coffee table in gold leaf. When the holidays roll around, use metallic tones liberally. Your traditional pieces and decorating scheme can obviously still take center stage, but sprinkle in some extra tinsel or garland this season. Add yellow or gold lights to deepen the illusion of warmth. After the holidays begin “undecorating” the same way you decorated. Take down holiday decorations, larger pieces, accessories and fabrics. This keeps your home decorating scheme fresh throughout the colder months and gives you the most warmth in your home when you need it. It also sets you up for spring by slowly taking the metallic tones away as the weather warms up, so by the time spring hits you’ll be ready to spend more time outdoors and incorporate more of those gentle spring tones in your interior decorating scheme.
