Trends come and go, that is their nature. Trying to keep designs looking current for longer is the challenge.

When putting in a modern kitchen or bathroom it is easy to confuse the ‘wow’ factor with the ‘now’ factor. New products and colours are very appealing because of their freshness and exclusivity. But when suddenly every home, magazine and design shop is displaying the same products and look, the exclusive interior suddenly becomes dated.

There are several ways around this. The most expensive option is to update the interior in the latest fashion every 2 years. While this is expensive you can be assured of having the most cutting edge house in the street. Alternatively using paint and paint effects to keep up to date with trends enables colors to be changed easily with minimal cost and effort.

Predict The Next Trend

A less expensive option is to try and pick what the next big thing will be and implement that look as soon as possible. By doing this the interior design has the maximum life possible. This is why designers are asked to predict what next year’s fashion will be so that customers can get the jump the next trend.

The problem with this is as soon something is identified as being next year’s trend it immediately become this years trend as consumers try to future proof their designs. Any advantage gained can be quickly lost.

Back to the Future

One way of future proofing you interior is to look to the past. Classic design is always in and always will be in. From art deco interiors, to country kitchens, to black and white tiled bathrooms, some styles will always be timeless.

To make sure the design investment is enjoyed for the longest possible time is to design something that is loved from day one and ignore the trends. If a particular colour or style is liked, the chances are it will continue to be loved long after any trend has come and gone.

In all cases research and employ a designer. Magazines and books are a good source of information, but to see what is really out there, clients need to get out or search the internet and magazines to see what is available.

Get the Right Help

Take time to find a designer. Research who is out there, look at their work. Check out their qualifications, and talk to them. It will be quickly obvious if there is a connection and if you want to continue working with them. A good designer will work with the client to enhance the look they want rather than impose their own sense of style. A designer can add to ideas, refine them, and guide the design to produce something better than hoped for but still essentially individual.

Trends come and go faster that than can be kept up with. While some things have a longer life than others ultimately what is best for the individuals home comes from within.
