Leave your pumpkins uncarved and extend their longevity while opening yourself to new decorating options.
Use pumpkins as a canvas to display your holiday excitement but leave the knives in the kitchen. Uncarved pumpkins are just as festive as jack-o-lanterns but they don’t rot as quickly, don’t have that pumpkin odor and the decorating process isn’t as messy. Try one of the following suggestions or create your own festive ways to go pumpkin wild this Halloween. Pumpkin Man – Similar to a snowman, create a pumpkin man by stacking the fall fruit on top of each other and then use a marker or accessories to decorate his face. If you’re worried about the stack falling over, try using wooden dowels to hold them together. Fall Floral – Make your own floral display by collecting leaves and dried flowers that hold their colors well. Fill a pot and arrange the leaves on top and then place your pumpkin on these leaves, finish your display by gluing the remaining leaves and flowers in a way that makes it appear as if they’re bursting forth from the pumpkin. If you’re lucky enough to have a pumpkin with a long vine attached, glue items directly to the vine for a cascading effect. Crafty Pumpkin – If you’re a crafter then there’s a box of craft supplies somewhere in your home. Use your crafts (ribbons, scraps of fabric, lace, yarn) to decorate the pumpkin but erase all traditional thoughts from your mind and treat it as you would a Christmas ball or an Easter egg. Replacement Pumpkin – Look around your home and begin taking down standard knickknacks and replacing them with little gourd pumpkins. These surprising touches often add a great sense of whimsy to your home with very little effort. Painted Pretties – Again, remove all traditional thoughts from your head and paint your pumpkin. No faces, but designs and patterns. Try using a stencil to cover the entire orb with a Greek key or some other repetitive pattern that will add visual interest. Decoupaged Delights – This technique is a little tricky but can be a show stopper. Decoupage your pumpkin with printed pictures of Halloween scenes, or create one spooky pictograph story or scene around your pumpkin. And if you’re the nostalgic sort, use photocopies of your favorite family Halloween photos to create a work of art that is almost heirloom-worthy. When Halloween is just a week away you can take your pumpkin creations and carve them for a frightful display and roast the seeds for a tasty treat. This way you get all you can from these great seasonal gifts.
