White walls are the latest trend in home decorating as long as the rest of your decorating scheme is organized to reflect that.
A few years back a house just didn’t look finished if the walls were still white but as trends have a way of coming and going, white walls are back but only with careful planning. As long as you’re thinking in advance and balance your walls with the rest of the décor you can really make white walls work for you. Types of WhiteBefore you just opt for the standard contractor’s white paint color in your area, consider all the options available. There are hundreds of white shades out there and each paint brand makes their own wide variety. It’s the undertone that sets them apart and can really affect the mood of a room so look at the undertone and determine which one fits best with the mood you’re trying to create. Good CoverageIf you’re painting over walls that already have color you’re going to want to prime the walls first and then finish it off with one or two coats of paint for a good even tone that doesn’t even show a hint of the previous color. Your FurnitureThere are a couple ways to go with the furniture when you have white walls, you can go for a white on white look and use white furniture, but make sure the colors have different undertones so there is some depth and variation in the room, otherwise it will seem too sterile. If you’re going for color then go for color, really pick furniture that will pop against the white background and draw attention to itself. In a room with white walls it’s the furniture that takes center stage. If you have neutral furniture you can again go for a moderation of white on white with neutrals but this tends to look bland. Or you can use neutrals as more background and choose other elements to make the room shine. The ExtrasIf you have white walls the rest of the room has to simply vibrate with energy. Select throw pillows, furniture, artwork, photos, knickknacks, window treatments and anything else that goes into the room with this in mind. You want to draw attention away from the white and let the white simply speak as a calm, cool, clean backdrop to the real stars of the room. By following these steps you can create a unique and new look for your home that reflects personality and style. When done correctly white walls draw the attention to the important elements of the room and keep a room looking fresh and exciting.
